“Sapiosexuality -- The Intersection Of Smarts And Sex” Is The Thirteenth Virtual Symposium's Topic!

“Soon the idea came. It was so simple, so obvious, he should have thought of it long ago. His greatest talent was thinking. His greatest pleasure was fucking. ‘Ye gods!’ he thought, ‘What if I put my two greatnesses together?’

"Just then the sun went black.”

-- Allen Sherman

“Sapiosexuality -- the intersection of smarts and sex” was the blogosphere’s top choice for the upcoming virtual symposium’s topic. We had a lot of voters this time – including some folks who seem to be new to the whole symposium project. To those who pimped this vote, thank you! (And to those of you who voted for one of the runners up, take heart: You’ll be seeing these topics again at some point…)

For those new to the virtual symposium: In short, it’s a simultaneous act of blogging. Here’s how it works: Anybody with a blog on this site is welcome to join in. All choosing to participate will create something – an essay, a cartoon, an erotic story, a memoir, a series of one-line aphorisms, an image collage, a photo montage, a poem, or anything else – relating to “International Intrigue.” At a pre-arranged time and date (see below) all participants post their contributions.

Want a better sense of how it works – or just some good reads? Here’s a link to the participants’ list from the twelfth symposium: Participants List For The Twelfth Virtual Symposium International Intrigue

Feel free to take the basic idea of “Sapiosexuality -- the intersection of smarts and sex” and stretch it to as wild an interpretation as you like -- the post should reflect you! The last thing we need is a dozen monotonous texts on the same topic. Anything goes, as long as there is a trace of the original idea in the post.

On the morning of November 1 (this Sunday, for those keeping score), all participants will post their creations. Please, please, post ‘em to your own blogs early: I do want to link to them in a central post here, but I don’t want to be stapled to my desk all day.

I'll be responsible for posting links to your blogs here – I want to make this as effortless for participants as possible! Once you’ve posted, leave a note in the comments section here so I know to link to your submission. I will, of course, post latecomers… people do check back to see whether new participants have joined the symposium. But after the morning of November 1, I may not be updating the list as obsessively.

Additionally, links sometimes take a while to become live. The sooner I can scoop up the link to your , the faster (hopefully) others will be able to click through to it.

As for contributions themselves: The idea is to create something new, as opposed to using posts to respond to other posts (although the comments section will, of course, remain fair game). Leave a note in the blog comments, and I’ll use a post on this blog that day to link to all contributions.

A suggestion: Participants may want to refer to either the virtual symposium or the topic itself in their headline. Not a requirement – there are no requirements, save for originality and participation – but a suggestion which will let the wide blog community know what we’re doing.

This is not a contest. No souvenir mugs will be sent, nor ribbons awarded. The idea here is for those interested to, on a single day, offer an interpretation of a single topic for the sheer fun of it.

By all means, encourage other bloggers to participate – and to let me know they’re doing so through this post, so on the morning of November 1 I can link to their posts. Oh, and please consider this an invitation – if not a request – to pimp the symposium both on your own blogs, and in individual requests to bloggers whom you’d like to see represented. The more the merrier, right? There are some folks with very distinct voices on this site who aren’t yet participating – let’s bring ‘em in and make ‘em one of us, one of us, one of us!

Remember, of course, to keep things in your voice!

Every symposium, there are a few newbies who contribute posts, and don’t let me know about their contributions (I catch some by watching the “recent posts” feed, but that’s hit or miss). So… once you post, please leave me a note on the master list post, or here! (I get messages about the symposium which are attached to the blog a little faster than the ones which are emailed to me.)

Can’t wait to see the results!

Pimp the symposium, pimp the symposium, pimp the symposium... the viewers you bring in may be your own. Can't get more (verbally) naked than that...

Final note: When the page with all the contributors goes live, please consider adding the link to your post, even if the has already gone live. Doing so allows people to readily access all the other offerings… which is, after all, one of the purposes of this exercise.

This topic has already caused me to question myself. I wrote my submission yesterday, and when I was finished I had a new perspective to consider.

Thanks, humor!

You're a symposium unto yourself!

But yeah, you've pretty much encapsulated the joy of the symposium... it's an exercise in perspective. Looking forward to reading your contribution!

I shoulda stumped for opening lines but we lacked big campaign donors. Blogtown LOVES the idea of sapiosexuals so it may have been inevitable, much like the Kardashians, the Ice Bucket Challenge and Ben Carson. Like all the works of men, this too shall pass if we're patient.

I know you were set on opening lines, but why so grumpy?

Sapiosexuality.
Huh. THUD. I dunno. I got nothing.
I think I might end up writing about how talking about physics might get me hot.
Nah.
Maybe I will write about the fact that I have had lovers that were not smart enough... And how sad that made me when I realized I couldn't stay with them. And how relieved after I was no longer with them.
Or maybe I will write about how I have always felt like I could always try harder to learn and how that turns me on.
Hm.
Now I need to keep this as a note to myself.
Kitkat

The observant make the best lovers,
I may not do right, but I do write,
I have bliss, joy, and happiness in my life,

I am glad about this topic. I have much to think about this week. i hope others can wrap their heads around this topic. LOL You don't need a high IQ to want to be with someone who thinks. Think about if someone's political views match yours, or they like poetry or writing in general. Good luck folks. I hope it is a good turnout.
I dunno, being with someone whose political views aren't one's own could add subtext to interactions...

Thank you for the good wishes to all symposium contributors. I hope it's a good turnout, too!

Um, right?

This is distressing... I will send Gntillhom a note.

Thank you for your hustling and drumming! The symposium, too, is a whore: It takes all who wish it.

Ceci est affligeant ... Je vais envoyer Gntillhom une note.

Merci pour votre bousculade et les tambours! Le symposium, aussi, est une prostituée: Il faut tout qui le souhaitent.

I"ll be out this time.
To start with, I'm not in the mood to post but in a doom. Real life, you know ... i'm kind of off-blog mode.
I may com on Sunday, but it's unsure.
And the topic ... though you put a subtitle, I find it unclear. Smarts ... what do you mean ? Intelligence ? Cerebrality ?
How can i - or, better, Annie, since she pimped the poll, I'd tell her how to - pimp in french something I don't have a real clue of ?
Would you explain a bit more, please ? (no need of oole translator in the answer)..
Regards.

This topic falls under the heading of non-specific. There is a wide variety of possible interpretations. I take it to mean the role intelligence has in sexual play -- if it has any! Other people may think of it differently.

Someone might want to write about what it would be like for two brilliant physicists to have sex in their laboratory.

Someone might want to show offerings of how people they think are smart have portrayed sexuality in their artwork.

Some may talk about why they do or do not feel intelligence plays a role in very causal sexual dating.

I am sure some will come up with entirely different interpretations.

As I say in the symposium suggestions (because, really, aside from writing about the topic and leaving me a note here telling me you have posted there are no rules), all interpretations are valid.

In short, whatever you think the topic means is absolutely correct!
