Angelina Jolie

It's been reported today that Angelina Jolie has had a double mastectomy. I just finished reading her Op-ED in the NYTimes and it's inspiring and I think a 'must read' for all women. (And men of course)

She carries the gene BRCA1, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

Her doctors estimated that she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.

Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average.

Her mother fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56.

She is a VERY brave woman indeed and there's no doubt in my mind that she loves her children and Brad Pitt very much.

Brad was at her side throughout the months of treatments and procedures and has been very supportive and loving.

That my friends is What it means to be a man

To quote Angelina:

"I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.

Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of."

She is incredible! -tm

She is brave. Now I hear she's planning on getting her ovaries removed too further decrease the chances of developing cancer. Good for her!

I think she is extremely brave. And if she uses her popularity to educate women, so be it! It's not like the masses would pay attention to a nobody.

Exactly. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of women can't afford the same treatment she received....

I hadn't heard that yet. What a scary thing to go through but lucky to have good support. A shame that probably most women do not have the means to get tested and be able to do what she do. Thanks for posting this and I wish her all the best. Very brave thing to do.

It is an inspiration and very courageous for her to make it public. My wife had a mastectomy (1) about 20 years ago. And as she says, it is a lot better than the options. It has been frustrating for her as he has always enjoyed her sexuality, but she never dwells on it. Actually it has had little effect on our lifestyle activities. We always tell in advance, though it is not in our profile.

I'm so happy to hear that she 'never dwells' on it and that it's had little effect on your lifestyle. Good for the both of you!
