HARLOTS, WHORES AND HACKABOUTS

I read a lot of book reviews; a review is sometimes more interesting than the book! I have just read a review of the recently published book, Harlots, Whores and Hackabouts, written by Kate Lister. So this post is a review of a review of a book!

The book is a history of . In fourteenth-century London, prostitutes frequented streets called Gropecunt Lane, Sluts Hole and Whores Nest.

The book charts the hypocrisy surrounding sex work. The fifteenth-century French king, Charles VII, enjoyed the sexual services of a well remunerated royal mistress while ordering street sex workers to work in state-run brothels for very little money.

The different names for sex workers also reflect a hypocritical hierarchy based on the wealth and power of patrons. At the high end, there are mistresses, courtesans and escorts; at the low end, there are concubines, harlots and whores. They are all sex workers but their judged worth is dependent on how much they are paid.

Sex for money has a very long history. Governments worldwide have tried to both prohibit and tolerate the sex trade. Attempts to prohibit sex work have invariably focused on the women who sell their sexual services and rarely the men who buy their services. These attempts have largely failed. Sex work still happened and it still happens.

In my opinion, governments should accept that sex work happens and make it a safe activity. I am impressed with how some European cities, though none in Britain, manage sex work. In Amsterdam, for example, the red light district is in the heart of the city centre where bars, restaurants, shops, museums and churches flourish. It is a safe place which can be easily policed; health services can be easily accessed and taxes can be easily collected.

Do you think sex work should be criminalised or decriminalised?
Have you ever paid for sex or ever been paid for sex?

As a liberal, I believe that sex work should be decriminalised. People should be free to sell and buy sex if they freely choose to. However, the freedom to choose varies between people, especially women in the case of sex work. Very poor women may have little choice other than to sell their sexual services just to survive. But this can only be remedied by tackling poverty and gender inequality.

I have not paid for sex unless buying a meal on a date counts! However, I have tried to sell my sexual services. When I first moved to Nottingham, I had no friends here and was a little lonely. I decided to place an advert in the local newspaper offering my sexual services to women. It was not my brightest idea. No woman contacted me and I had to change my mobile phone number after receiving unwanted and often offensive phone calls, voicemail messages and texts from men. My career as a male escort was very short-lived!

Below is the Jean-Leon Gerome painting, Phryne before the Areopagus.

I wonder whether this post will survive the site’s algorithms and not be banned. The algorithms will probably think I am prostituting myself and not writing about prostitution!

The post was banned. I've had to re-post but substitute the P word with sex work. Let's see whether the algorithm allows this; surely this site cannot have a problem with sex and work!

This was an intriguing read today, as I agree prostitution should be legalized as there are many women who enjoy the profession and are quite skilled at it.

Do you think sex work should be criminalised or decriminalised? I think it should be legalized as ladies need to earn a paycheck too.

Have you ever paid for sex or ever been paid for sex? No I have never paid or been paid for sex, although I have thought about having my own male brothel. I have had many men interested in working for me or should I say under me jk...But seriously would love to have my own male brothel..

I hope you enjoy your weekend..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

I don't know about that, the site sure doesn't work well and getting sex from here is a lot of work.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Do you think sex work should be criminalised or decriminalised? - What we're doing (in most places) in the US is CRAZY, and wholly not working. For sure sex work should be make legal, regulated, and TAXED.

Have you ever paid for sex or ever been paid for sex? - Yes, at a legal house out in Nevada - see my post Paying for It.

Back when Wichita was a thriving cowtown, there was a significant red light district just across the river that catered to the cowboys coming off the cattle drives.

I don’t think it should be legal. I would guess that the government would try preside over it and it would just be a nightmare. I think it would encourage trafficking. I believe it would bring us one step closer….
To what? Well, we are basically decriminalizing drugs, certain crimes, cage fighting is the new coliseum fav, people flock to the lifestyles of the rich….
I think we need to back up a bit.
I never paid for sex. But like most men, I did pay out the fifty dollar bar tab. And got a good night kiss. 🤣🤣. Some nights I didn’t even get that. I think that may fall under the gambling category. Which I’m not good at either. 🤪
Would I have accepted money for sex? Hell yeah. 🤣

Have a great day! 💋

I have never paid or been paid.
I think if people are willing to sell their sexual services, it should be legalized and some rules set out. It needs to be safe.

If legalized then it could be regulated. Hm. I wonder which government agency it would fall under. The Food and Drug Administration? Maybe that would be just for oral sex. The US Department of Agriculture? Sex workers could have ratings ... like beef ... USDA Prime, USDA Choice, etc.

Have I ever paid for sex? Does buying a new vibrator count?
Have I ever been paid for sex? No but since joining this site, I have had offers.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

I'm going to move over to the dark side soon, perhaps next week. I'm just setting up shop there before I move in.

Until a couple of hundred years ago, marriage was often about money but then so-called love changed things. Some people still see marriage as prostitution!

Perhaps a dedicated government agency is needed, the Department for Sex?

Do you think sex work should be criminalised or decriminalised? - I believe it should be decriminalised. It's not as if it's ever going to go away, it would need a few tweeks though
Have you ever paid for sex or ever been paid for sex? - No, I can't afford it! Everything's going up!
