Greeks overreact to... fake oral sex at a church?

Reading around the web this morning, I came across a funny yet not so funny story...

Apparently, the Greek community of Lindos, Rhodes is banning ALL foreign weddings at the St. Paul’s Bay Chapel because a British couple took a photo of the new bride staged to perform oral sex on her new husband outside the church. They said it was meant to show their cheeky sense of humor, and that they regretted it once the locals heard about it from British media.

Lindos’ economy is largely dependent on weddings, and 99% percent come from the UK.

Do you think the the Bishop and Mayor are overreacting?

Eliminating your community’s #1 industry in a country with a crappy economy doesn’t sound like a good idea.

Evidently they have zero sense of humor and absolutely no idea how much it's going to cost their economy

I agree with you on both points there. Thanks for dropping in so early this morning.

Indeed. Also a pity that so many people lost their senses of humor.

You’re right about that. If it happened INSIDE the church, I would better understand the outrage. Outside the church, though, let it go.

I don't see it as an over-reaction by the Greeks and I hope the couple (and whoever took the photo) feel properly ashamed of themselves especially when lots of other weddings have had to be cancelled due to their stupidity. I don't accept "Oh it's just our cheeky nature" as a valid excuse, they just don't show respect.

It's a similar story to those students (?) who went topless/naked on some sacred mountain in Malaysia and subsequently got arrested.

Just because you can, and have a camera phone at the ready to show/prove you did, doesn't mean you should.

You are probably right on that.

And may God forgive all sinners for the wrongs they have done.

Hi Lala,

As far as I am aware, it is the only church performing weddings there, and yes, the ban was due to this one couple’s action. From what I read, Lindos is a very beautiful place, and there are a number of British ex-pats in the area.

Interestingly, the mayor has held off issuing the ban until this year’s wedding season is over. Like Recalcitrant’s comment, that seems to be very hypocritical, and I agree with you that the foreigner wedding ban is too extreme.

There’s a sick twisted aspect of today’s young adults and those following right behind them for instant gratification. That’s why they use the social media photo and video sites to upload their deeds. At least they should wait until the statue of limitations runs out.

She didn’t though. It was just staged to look that way.

Hypocritical in that he didn’t issue the ban immediately.

If they really were SO outraged, issue the ban immediately. Yes, then those who had booked weddings would have to do what travelers on holiday do when their air carrier goes into bankruptcy/receivership... find another way/place.

My opinion is that no one should suffer repercussions from that couple’s actions. A town ordinance banning lewd and lascivious conduct (and such staged conduct) would be all that’s needed.

If the conduct is SO outrageous or offensive to mandate a ban, it is hypocritical to delay imposing such a ban.

To use an analogy from World Series Game 3 Friday night, it is like the MLB Commissioner suspending Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel 5 games for an alleged inappropriate gesture towards Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish, but delaying the suspension until the start of the regular season next year out of fairness to Gurriel's teammates.

That doesn't happen in soccer. If someone earns a red card (ejection) or two yellow cards (which equal one red card), they are suspended for the next match. Period.

Actually it is. If the conduct is SO outrageous, implement the punishment immediately. Not doing so is a different type of hyprocracy from engaging in the same behavior they seek to ban. (And I've known pastors in my life who could tell very raunchy jokes, one of whom knew Rev. Fred Rogers, the TV host.)

I bet the Dodgers wish Gurriel had been suspended immediately... he had a 3-run home run in the Astros' 13-12 Game 5 win Sunday night.

No, but lack in taking immediate action on something they are allegedly SO offended by brings up two synonyms for hypocrisy: "empty talk" and "insincerity", perhaps even a third: "affectation", and a fourth: "pietism".

Because you say so? Not so.

Personally, I think they did raise a ruckus so they could cover their a$$ets on some not so pious things they have done. (as Recalcitrant already pointed out to you)
