I Am Not Saying You Are Stupid

I Am Not Saying You Are Stupid

When I was growing up, calling someone 'stupid' was almost as bad as swearing. It just wasn't allowed. To this day, I don't think I have called someone stupid. However, I have told someone their actions were stupid.

You know the people I mean:

They think yelling at someone whose first language isn't English, is gong to make them understand them.

They run across multiple lanes of traffic on a red light, to catch a bus.

They think no one will notice when they go through the grocery store Express Line with a full shopping cart .

They like having a dog but not the responsibility of cleaning up after them.

They think asking the same question over and over again will result in a different answer.

They get behind the wheel of car to drive when they aren't sober.

They wear their mandatory face mask around their neck or pull it up to slurp their coffee or other beverage.

They have multiple profiles on here using the same pictures

What do you do when someone does something 'stupid'?

Stupid is as stupid does...

Poor judgment and acting against self-interest seem more like rules of human behavior than exceptions.

As such, assuming that I am not in harm's way or worried about becoming collateral damage, my preference is (like the Dude) to *abide*. As you point out, other than Schadenfreude, there is nothing to be gained by calling-out people for a public humiliation. Indeed, people are often loath to receive criticism, even constructively and in private.

Let it go and move along to more productive pursuits.

I'm told I get a look on my face the essentially says "you're (stupid, an arcehole, dumber than a rock, etc)

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I try to ignore them and let it go. I don't want to bring myself down to their level.

I call myself 'stupid' often. Everyone else gets called an 'idiot' (as long as they can't hear me say it)

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

When some one does some of the things you mentioned I think they need a sign to hang around their neck to remind THEM that they are stupid..At one time there was a show on TV 'Where's your sign". Most of the time, I think, stupid has to be learned, there is no way some of the things they do can be done without some knowledge and fore thought.. I think that most don't even realize what they do , the first time.. The world is full of them , they are allowed to drive and worse they can vote!!, Just my opinion, I think I can have one..Off my soap back and back to the News!!

some of the examples you listed ARE examples of "stupid behavior",
some people just make mistakes or poor decisions,
we ARE all human after all. some are just "more human" than others.
but others are people plain being ignorant, there IS a difference,
just the effect on others is the same.

its when they cross the line between hurting themselves
and hurting others that the ethics of how to act comes into question.
go ahead and get yourself hit by a bus, but then medical costs
and availability suffer for ALL of us.
but what if I get hit trying to save you?
dont wear a mask? go ahead and dont!
but if youre an asymptomatic carrier, YOU could infect ME.
unfortunately, there are rarely easy answers, if any at all.

people caught acting stupidly will react with offensive retaliation
out of embarrassment and the fear of appearing inferior
(kinda like in todays american politics, not naming names here).
people acting ignorantly ALREADY decided youre not worth a fuck.

i guess the best we can do is "grin and bear it"
even if its not really the "right" answer, just the easiest,
and hope "they" dont still make "us" suffer some consequence
from their actions.

wish i had a better answer, maybe somebody else does ?

"well only get through this if we work together. if we dont, none of us will"

You certainly raise valid points. I am sure I would react differently if I was somehow put in harm's way. Thanks for stopping by.

I wasn't familiar with those, so looked them up. Shaking my head in disbelief at what some of the award winners did to achieve the recognition!
