What Did You Just Say?

Before the widespread use of desktop computers and cell phones, one of my jobs was in mortgage collections. We had "to'" document customer conversations and payment agreements. With limited space and time, a lexicon of terms was necessary so that anyone reading the notes could quickly understand the summations. They included:

BK Bankruptcy

DNK Does Not Know

EOW End Of Week

LMTC Left Message To. Call

OOW Out Of Work

WCB Will Call Back

Now seems abbreviations and acronyms have crept into everyday language. You see them everywhere: emails, texts, tweets. To be honest, I am not a big fan of them. My “daughter.” teases that my texts and tweets sound so formal and structured. What can I say? I like proper grammar and am a stickler for spelling. I worry if those skills are being diminished.

Here’s a quick tutorial with some of the newest and most commonly used short forms:

TFW That Feeling When

NBD No Big Deal

FOMO Fear of Missing Out

ICMYI In Case You Missed It

IIRC If I Recall Correctly

TLDR Too Long Did Not Read

GMTA Great Minds Think Alike

I know people will argue it is all about convenience and time-saving. Kids love using them as a secret code they hope their parents will not understand.

I know the list i provided is brief. Are here any that you particularly like to use? Or are you like me, I prefer the old-fashioned way of writing full words and sentences?

Another great post IMHO! It's nice to see you posting again sexyldy.

I try to avoid abbreviations as much as possible. It generally leaves less room for interpretation.

Proper grammar and spelling exist for good reason. They help to express oneself unambiguously and thus save time in communication ...

Great abbreviations, some of them I knew but the banking ones I had never heard before, thanks for sharing these with us today. And I hope your evening is a terrific one..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

I'm with you on the 'chat speak'. Ugh. I understand that it makes texting easier but c'mon ... is 'you' such a long word that it needs to be abbreviated?

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

Actually, on a site (not sight) such as this, being able to craft an articulate, clear message is a real boon. Many people cannot express themselves well in writing - let alone text (or txt -ought to be capitalised and nuances are lost in rapid exchanges, say on IM (on the rare times it works) or in chat rooms.

Many abbreviations have multiple interpretations, of course - then add to that the fact that this site tends not to transmit all the letters that one types, it is a wonder any communication happens!

The one that got me for the longest time was SMH [ I had to ask someone so I didn't make some gaffe]
My favorite is WTF but by and large I prefer to spell things out: proper grammar prevents mis-understanding

(Virtual Symposium Group) use Virtual Symposium Group

One reason I don't like to text is I get along better with people who are literate.

I used to be in the TS (timeshare) business. We called it crime share.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I don't know too many and I only use the basic ones. But I guess it depends on where you're going to use them and with who. Makes little sense if the party you're texting with isn't up to speed.

Aaouietyattcwut.

(Acronyms are only useful if everyone that your are trying to communicate with understand them.)

Please don't let me be misunderstood.

Hi, pretty lady ... not much into the abbreviation thingy either - I only knew "GMTA". Ever heard of this one: "GGG", "good, giving, and game", and it means one should strive to be good in bed, giving "equal time and equal pleasure" to one's partner, and game "for anything – within reason". I prefer the use of actual words. Excellent post - thank you!

In Luv, Lite, Laffter ...

Thank you for your support. It is much appreciated. I took a little break from posting to refresh and re-energize.
What used to be so annoying at work, was when acronyms started to be reused - that was confusing!

It kind of goes with how I feel about emojis. They can be over-used to the point of annoyance.

Those are all valid points that you raised. The over-use does go far beyond this site. I see it in text messages, tweets and emails.
Thanks for stopping by. It's nice to see you here again

The one that took my awhile to figure out is ROTFLMFAO. I have also seen it as ROFL and ROTFL. I wonder if it's a generational thing that we support proper grammar and spelling?
