Making A Difference To Someone

One of my elderly, widowed neighbours sometimes comes across as aloof, cranky and unfriendly. Other times, she is engaging, cheery and congenial. You just don't know which version you will encounter.

A few days ago, she was standing in her driveway looking pensive. I greeted her as I always do and asked if everything was OK. We chatted for a few minutes and I asked if she needed anything at the store. Initially, she was quite hesitant. She finally admitted she could always use a loaf of bread but didn't want me to make a special trip. Of course, I did in fact make a special trip just for her.

Later, when I delivered that $2.00 loaf of bread, tears glistened in her eyes. She insisted I wait while she got her purse. When she pulled out the money, a $5.00 bill was clutched in her fingers. I told her I didn't want her paying me, it was my pleasure to help. She pulled herself up to her full height, eyes glistening and declared, "I know that. And I know that you really mean it. But I appreciate your help." Now it was my eyes that were glistening as a thanked her and slowly returned home.

It's always nice when you can help someone who needs it. ❗

I will never be doing any big things in my life but I can help make life a bit better or add cheer to many others just by being positive or helpful in "little things" that are not little. Like what you did.

If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin."

I always behave. Preferably not well.

Well done sl1k

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I have to share that during the first half of 2021 I did some volunteer work at the Virginia Department of Health making a receiving calls from elderly (over 65) Virginia residents who were having trouble getting appointments to receive their Covid-19 vaccinations. Now, to me, sitting in a chair talking on the phone was one of those "little things" but to the people I talked to and helped schedule appointments for them it was one of the biggest and best things that had happened to them in a while - more than one person cried. So, neither one of us may ever win a Nobel prize, neither one of us my engineer the next great breakthrough much of what we consider "little things" mean the world to someone else. As Paul Overstreet says "everyone is somebody's hero"

Indeed. You never know when the roles can be reversed and you are the one who needs help.

It’s those ‘little’ things that often have the biggest impact. Decent human kindness costs nothing.

A friendly, helpful voice on the other end of the phone often is the only voice May have had in days. Making a difference in someone’s life through “little things” has an immeasurable impact. “Everyone is someone’s hero” really says it all. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

Real life needs no embellishments. That incident impacted me more than I imagined.

I wish I could make my gruff, overbearing neighbour cry by buying him a loaf of bread!

it truly is , the little things in life and those that show appreciation for that outreach. I dont care if she ends up making bread pudding or bread crumbs with it, but everytime i went to the store....i will bring her bread. Love this story...Kudos to you and her~

Are you sure about that? It wasn't a reaction I had expected. I have known the woman since I was a teenager; she has seen my kids grow up. She has been a widow for a dozen years and has had some bad falls. Some days she sounds ready to give up and others, she is engaging and in good spirits. Who knows what I will be like if I get to her age?

Agree. Often, it's those seemingly "little things" that can have the biggest impact.

I didn't think I did anything special, just what any decent, caring human being would do, especially knowing she is on her own. We can never have enough good friends, especially on here . Hope you have a special Hump Day.
