Setting and Keeping Goals

Setting and Keeping Goals

Why are some goals so hard to keep? And why do we keep setting the same goals - again and again - even after we fail?

According to psychologist Dr. Janet Polivy, several new studies show that the human brain is “hard-wired” to be optimistic- which drives us to challenge ourselves, and believe that we can achieve new things. But, Dr. Polivy says there are times when our optimism can get the best of us, and sabotage our chances of success because we tend to set unrealistically high expectations for ourselves.

Do you set personal goals or make "Daily To-Do Lists"? How well do achieve or keep them?

I think effective goal-setting evolves over time.
I have never been a list-maker but know others who can't survive without their daily "To-Do" List.
I do take time to reflect on my experiences and analyze what have I learned from them.

The aposite phrase is: I love deadlines - I love the wooshing noise they make as they pass by!

Life does have a nasty habit of putting the most awkward crimps in one's plans and when that happens to you in spades, goals kind of fall by the wayside.

I have a to do list a mile long.
I get things check off I add new jobs.
I do other jobs in-between I make sure I right them in.
Half the list is something I do every spring and fall
So thing on the list is nicer ,4 years old I figure they will get done in time.
I'm retired yet I work harder at home then I did at work.
I still get time to play, I hunt and fish.
I'm on here too

My goal is to create and review my to-do list every day. And every day, I succeed in looking at it . 😊❗

You know I never have set goals, as I live one day at a time. But I do make lists so that I won't forget certain things. I usually make grocery lists on my phone so that I always have it with me, and this does help.

I have noticed that I do write things down more so as I get older, like passwords, and certain important information so that I have it available when I need it.

I hope you have enjoyed your Friday and have a great weekend..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

I was never up to the task of making to-do lists or staying on task.

The only times I prepare, are for photography jobs.

Other than that, I feel like I'm bouncing along on a whim.

My only list is a bucket list of things I want to do, not what I have to do. And I do agree that goal setting does evolve over time - my goals are much more realistic now than were even 10 years ago

I do make lists of things to do but they always depress me as so little gets ticked off!

I made lists of things to do at work on the small pullouts that you can use for your daily place-keeper on those Covington Planners or ones like it. When I had some idle time I would revisit the list. It is an easy way to keep the list current and on your mind. I got so much stuff done that would have been forgotten otherwise.

Two kinds of people you meet at work are the daily-beaters (aka dairy farmer types) and the what-iffers (aka big thought type); and yes there are many other types. I was never the type to count my chickens everyday or month so I needed that list and a system to keep me on it.

You can leave me a message here

A grocery list is the one exception I have. If I feel lost if I get to the store without it!

I agree, life instances can throw a monkey wrench into good intentions. How we react and respond to those situations is also important. Nice to see you stopping by again

Many folks I know who have retired, keep themselves so busy, they wonder how they ever had time to work!

Hmmm...is looking all that you do? Somehow I doubt that.

We often don't like to admit that a written list will benefit us. Reminds me of walking into a room and stopping and wondering, "Hmmm, what did I come in here for?"
Btw...a hug "No-No" is writing down passwords. But, I know what you mean since we can have dozens of places where we need to use them and we are NOT supposed to use the same one everywhere!

Many share that challenge! I know people who threw away their scales and choose to be control their eating and not be tied to whatever number is on the scale

Since photography is a passion of yours, I can understand you wanting to be precise and in control, "Bouncing along on a whim" sounds very free-spirited

Keeping a list of accomplishments achieved throughout the list was something we were encouraged to do. It facilitated the self-assessment phase of the year-end performance review process. Thanks for stopping by and sharing how your manage your lists.

I'm great at setting goals - keeping them is another story! I live on do-to lists, tho, my ADD and OCD are ALWAYS in STRUGGLE. It's a constant second by second battle for me ... I never give up even trying ...

In Luv, Lite, Laffter ...

To-do lists can be beneficial for keeping on track and a struggle to maintain regardless of ADD and OCD. I can tell you are a strong, resilient woman who never gives up. Keep up the hard work!
