Risk factors for Covid 19 death

Age, sex, obesity, and underlying illness have emerged as risk factors for covid-19 death in the UK, according to the largest cohort study to date published in The BMJ May 22, 2020.

The risk of death increases over age 50. Also risk is greater for males, the obese, or having underlying heart, lung, liver and kidney disease.

A team of UK researchers analysed data from 20,300 patients with covid-19 admitted 208 acute care hospitals in England, Wales, and Scotland between 6 February and 19 April 2020. This study covered about a third of patients admitted hospital with covid-19 in the U The average age of patients in the study was 73 years; ,068 men or 60% were admitted hospital and 8,065 women or 40%.

Increasing age, being , and underlying heart, lung, liver and kidney disease were factors known to cause poor outcomes. Researchers found that obesity was a key factor associated with higher risk of death not highlighted in known data from China.

Not a good time to be an obese male over 60 with high blood pressure, diabetes and lung problems.

Never a good time to be obese - male or female; to have high blood-pressure or diabetes. That's the bad news.

Various reasons why people might have impaired lung function. Unless the cause is smoking - in which case, please stop - then I don't have advice to offer concerning lung problems.

The good news is that all of obesity, hyper-tension and (type-2) diabetes have causes . . . causes that can be prevented via changes in diet and exercise habits.

Not easy to change - I'm not suggesting that it's EASY to change; only that change is possible. Two suggestions for anyone interested in exploring how to change.

First, view an 18 minute Tedx clip on Youtube by Dr Sarah Hallberg, titled Reversing Type 2 Diabetes. A 65-year old, formerly morbidly-obese, formerly diabetic man in my gym used this video as inspiration to change his life. His transformation has been amazing and impressive, which is why I am a believer.

Second, borrow from the library or buy a copy of the book Younger Next Year; read it and follow the program that the book recommends - beginning with a commitment to exercising 6 days a week for the rest of your life.

Not easy to change habits of a lifetime. On the other hand, when the choices are as stark as change or die . . . change, difficult as it may be, is so worth it.

The risk goes from a death rate of about 1% to a death rate of 5% to 10% for older males with two or more risk factors. About half the deaths are in nursing homes, jails and other group living settings in the U.S.

Plus we can expect a year or more for a vaccine from now. Trying to stay alive.
