I liked it all right. The idea was an interesting one. But I'm not a big Charlton Heston fan. He played a good Long John Silver! It was a good part for an overactor.

I have not seen this movie and I think, like Annie, it's a metaphor for our Earth, the only spacecraft that allows us to make our species exist, for now. Bravo for the summary that tracks the story of this film.
Thanks! That idea and this movie changed the way changed the way I thought about the future.

Merci ! Que l'idée et ce film ont changé la voie a changé la voie I pensé au futur.

I love this movie, I was 12 when it came out and remember being very sad when Louie was lost. I always thought living my life in a beautiful space-bound forest without asshole humans around would be THE life!
Me too! I was kind of annoyed too when they killed off Louie! The only thing that garden was missing was Eve.

It is. But I do appreciate that Freeman Lowell was a realistic character, with quirks and flaws rather than a one dimensional hero/savior.

I have never seen the movie but it sounds interesting. Great topic ... and I'm so upset that I was not the first person to bring up Soylent Green.

"Soylent Green is people!! Soylent Green is people!"

We're eating ourselves because we have exhausted every other natural resource on the planet. Very thought provoking.
Ha! Yeah, that was Heston's big line, that everyone remembers forever! Both movies reflect variations on the same theme- we gotta conserve more and consume less.

I've never heard of this movie so thanks for bringing it up. One would think that taking care of the planet we live on is a no brainer. Too bad some people's idea of "take care of" is at an idiot level and others just don't have the common sense to understand that we only have one Earth. Don't pollute and value living things; except some bugs. We have lots of bugs so the ones that find their way inside my home are eligible for annihilation.

Thank you sweetheart!
It's kind of relevant to me right now- a new paved bike trail is being gouged out of Al Sabo Preserve. I read the bikers' reviews online and the idiots call for more trimming of vegetation and making the place more "family friendly". I want to go all Freeman Lowell on these clowns. What's great about the place is the wild feel. They can go ride their fucking bikes on Interstate 94.

I had forgotten about this movie. I'll need to watch it again, but thanks for the synopsis. Even more appropriate today, isn't it? I believe also that the whole planet and all it's ecosystems are interconnected, we are killing ourselves as well as the planet.
Every day we wreck more wilderness and destroy more forest. It adds up to a barren and starved future for us.

Not being a science fiction buff, I haven't come across the Silent Running film but it's based on a very interesting premise.
It got me thinking what I'd select to take into space. I thought of plant seeds and then I thought of myself, but i eventually decided to send Donald Trump on this mission on the basis it will be a doomed one-way mission!
I read a hell of a lot of science fiction back in those days- not so much any more. I used to think I'd jump at the chance to travel in space or maybe colonize another planet. Now that I'm getting old I just wish most everyone else would go, and I'll stay here. I have a list of my own...

I bet you'd like it- Bruce Dern is great in it, the crazy fucker. So, what was the movie you watched?

It seems simple, doesn't it? But people's greed gets in the way.

I have never seen the film....not really into Science Fiction at all but it seems to have been very far sighted for the early 70's .

this movie was pivotal for me. I understood the need for preservation and I wept at his sacrifice. I remember thinking of him as a savior and wishing for a sequel when the dome was recovered and the plants became once more part of a living planet. (only one letter difference between plant and planet - I made a t shirt like this save the plan(e)t........

lord I was one weird child.

thanks for the memory

So it came to a sad ending after all.

I don't object to them riding in the preserve, but they want to take it over. They ignore the no bikes signs on certain trails, and they can't be bothered to alert you that they're coming up behind you. We ought to be able to get along....and we would, if they'd find someplace else to ride. This county has miles of bike trails. We need our preserve!

1972...the environmental movement was just beginning to draw a larger interest, so yes, it was far sighted for the times. There have been preservationists going back centuries, but awareness in the general population here in the states was just taking off. There's a lot of good science fiction and a number of really good scifi dystopia novels, but this one really stood out for me. I love trees.

It was a fine movie, wasn't it? Dern- and the script- gave Freeman Lowell's character depth. As fixated as he was, and fanatical, and as big a pain in the ass as he was, it was impossible for me to not identify with him or his choices. I seem to have found a kindred spirit in you.

I lived in Washington state during my elementary school years and thought I was destined to be a "Fire Watcher" out in the middle of some old growth forests. I think one of my teachers must have held that job at one time. Ever since then I have been a "tree hugging" nature boy. I guess it comes down to two philosophies: are we here to share or rule this world? What do we lose in spirit when we lose nature? An interesting post, and I have never heard of this movie. I did like Bruce Dern in "Support Your Local Sheriff" among others.

We see eye to eye about this. We're still animals, not disembodied intellect. And even as disembodied intellect, our consciousness would have evolved in a biological organism. I think man and nature are connected, and that without that connection we are less.

Thanks, Flower. There's a lot of really crummy science fiction movies, but there are also some great ones. For me this was one of the best. If we radically alter our environment, we may still be human, but what kind of human?

I love this movie. When he makes the decision to let the robots carry on without him, its just heart breaking. As for being simple...often the simple things are the hardest to understand.
Good post.
