Wisdom From the 17th Century

I've posted this before but I like reposting it from time to time, lest we forget.

What an inequitable thing it is for one man to have thousands, and another want bread, and that the pleasure of God is, that all men should have enough, and not that one man should abound in this worlds good, spending it upon his lusts, and another man of far better deserts, not be worth two pence, and that it is no such difficulty as men make it to be, to alter the course of the world in this thing, and that a few diligent and valiant spirits may turn the world upside down, if they observe their seasons, and shall with life and courage ingage accordingly.
  William Walwyn

William Walwyn was a 17th century cleric who was one of the driving forces behind the Leveller movement. They were committed to popular sovereignty.

Indeed we must. But when the game is rigged in favor of the powerful and wealthy it becomes impossible for the majority to make ends meet.

Like the guy who commented above in Spanish, they don't even make an exception for children. A crass callousness is the new Republican philosophy. It may as well be a feudal system.

It doesn't do any harm to remind ourselves of this sometimes. I wish the politicians would remember this .... homelessness is a massive problem in Ireland and and a serious reduction in their huge salaries would go a long way to making sure that every family had a home.

America spends billions to murder little brown children and the UK doesn't scrimp at military spending either. It would be cheaper to feed, clothe and shelter them but not nearly as much fun as napalming them. We may no longer have a hereditary aristocracy but we do have one based on certain people having the incredible good luck of hoarding vast wealth, and they do like their military toys. We read about the Thirty Years War and study the buildup to World War One but we don't learn anything from it. One of the main tasks of government is to protect the weak from the powerful. Why do we settle for so much less?

It's always been a fairy tale.
