Parking Lot Behavior

I was sitting in my car yesterday at a typical big box store, I had the engine idling (it's been cold so I was running the heater) while I was texting an important message. A flash in my rear view mirror caught my attention, it was a flash of sunlight off a car window behind me. The car was a squad.

Every time I see a squad car, I get that uncomfortable feeling that the cop wants to talk to me about something. That goes back to my high school days when the local cops were convinced I was some kind of an ne'er do well and used to stop me on a regular basis. And no, I was no different than any other teenager and was a pretty boring, straight shooter. But I digress.

The officer was writing a ticket to a guy who was parked in a handicap spot with no visible permit or license plate. That's two hundred and fifty bucks around here, and I silently applauded the cop because this is a violation I see just way too often.

The most annoying is delivery trucks helping themselves to the handicap spot because it's open, it's near the door, and they figure they will be in and out before someone who needs it comes along. (Where is the cop when that happens?)

Besides the handicap violations, parking lot behavior in general is annoying. In no particular order, these are the bad behaviors I see on a regular basis:

* Speeding. I know we're all in a hurry, but driving faster than 10-15 miles per hour in a parking lot is dangerous. Car vs. Pedestrian is a losing proposition for the pedestrian, especially at speed.

* The asshole who is in such a hurry they can't wait for you to finish backing out of a parking space. I've almost hit a half a dozen of those idiots in the last week or so.

* Leaving a shopping cart in the middle of the space. I watched an able-bodied, lazy-ass just the other day use a cart to haul his two, light-weight bags to his car. After putting them in the back seat, he got in, rolled his window down to grasp the cart and hold it away from his door so it wouldn't hit his car, then drove away, just leaving the cart there. I might add there was a cart corral about 12 steps away.

* It's okay to drop Mom off at the front door, but don't just sit there, blocking the entire door, while she does a week's worth of grocery shopping.

Common courtesy just doesn't seem to be very common anymore.

Yup, if people were a little more considerate, there'd be a lot less rage out there!
