Drink That Water!!

Holy shit.....what a scary day and a half I've had- all from not drinking enough water/liquids!! What a friggin' dummy!.....lol

I was at work on Wednesday and it was about 1:00 am. (I work 11 :00 p.m to 7:00 a.m.)

a supermarket shopper - I shop orders that people place online.

Anyway.........

I take my cart and get on the store floor to start an order. All of a sudden I get a bit nauseous and a few seconds later I felt really dizzy. That's the last thing I remember at that point.

The next thing I do remember after that is my night manager screaming "OH MY GOD"!! I think I sat up, or he helped me sit up...(that's a little fuzzy).....lol thinking to myself wtf am I doing sitting on the store floor-then the realization hits !! I passed the hell out ..........

He wanted to an ambulance and I wasn't having that! I told him he could one of my daughters to get , but that was it. They all insisted I go to the ER to get looked at. I honestly just wanted to go home and go to sleep.....lol

I was a good and let my daughters take to the ER......got in the back and because of some blood test results they decided to admit me (oh yay). It took about 3 or 4 hours to get a room. Thank God it wasn't a weekend night.....lol

Get settled in the room - feeling pretty good. I have to go the the bathroom - get up off the bed, get to the doorway and start to feel dizzy again, and you guessed it.....down again I went.

The first time I passed out I don't remember going down....this time I did....so I probably didn't technically pass out the second time.....lol

Had some tests and winds up it was a diagnosis of low potassium and dehydration. Four bags of IV fluids (one in the ER) through the night, plus a small (THANK GOD) bag of a liquid potassium (in the ER) that burned and stung like a MFer going in!! Ouch...ouch....ouch

Discharged this afternoon.....YAY!! But not going back to work until Saturday night. On the schedule tonight and off anyway Friday....so they'll live without me.....lol

Moral of this story.....Drink lots of water....Duh....lol It's been as hell over much of the country.

We often take our health for granted. It’s easy to think ‘bad’ things only happen to other people. Perhaps this was a ‘wake up’ call. Take care, first and foremost, of yourself!

So glad you found the cause of your passing out. The cause being dehydration and rectified with not too much trouble. Staying hydrated is as you say...very important.

It's important to understand why you were dehydrated. Lack of electrolytes may have been the principal culprit.

Thirst is our body's way of reminding us to drink. When we're low on electrolytes, our *thirst mechanism* shuts down and we sweat ourselves all the way to empty without "remembering" to replenish our water.

As an athlete, I try and stay ahead of the curve with mineral supplements. However, there are lots of foods that do the same: milk, yogurt, soymilk, squash, cheese, green leafy vegetables, pickles, bananas, strawberries, coconut water, and celery.

Regardless, complement your water intake with electrolytes- early and often!

Wow, that's more than just not drinking some water - you had to be majorly dehydrated for that to happen. Glad you recovered and know what to do to avoid it happening again.

Boy do you have my sympathy. My BP went so low the day of a doctor's appt I cancelled as I was too scared to drive and he was an hour away. The nurses called me every 15 minutes to make sure I was drinking water and keeping track of the ounces. My electrolytes were so bad I am now on potassium horse pills for two months. DRINK UP Noah is giving us water folks for your health

I was on the beach last week and I decided to go back to my car for my mp3 player (I know, I'm old). I walked across the sand and when I got to the path over the dunes I suddenly started to feel really dizzy. I stopped for a minute, collected myself and walked back to my stuff on the beach and sat back down in my sand chair. A 32oz bottle of flavored water later, I was fine. I too had no idea that I was dehydrated, but I obviously was. I was going to do a shore trip today in the 99* heat, but decided based on last week's experience that I would stay poolside at my apartment complex and sip lots of fluids!

Sorry you had your bad experience and I am glad your daughter talked you into the ER. Hopefully, you will stay hydrated and feeling good the rest of the summer dear!

Keep some Gatorade or PowerAde around because sometimes water isn't enough.
Hope your feeling better.

No it wasn't fun. All the poking and prodding while in the hospital...ugh!

I learned my lesson and plenty of water it will be for me!

Take care

So right....to stay hydrated! I'm not a fan of heat and humidity....it's the worst!

I'm not a big drinker, so I'm safe there and I have actually cut way down on coffee and don't drink dark sodas too much at all.

Thanks for the good thoughts! Enjoy your weekend!

Isn't that the truth on all that you said! I actually had just gone in for a check up and blood work. My PCP wanted some retesting of it and it was that night/morning that I passed out.

I'm trying to take better care...thanks!

Thanks....me too! It was a little scary wondering for awhile if it was something serious. Finding out it was easily remedied was mind easing!
