Sex Sculptures in Indian Temples

Do you ever thought why many ancient Indian temples have sex sculptures? I was reading and thinking about it to find the reason behind it past many years. I found many reasons behind it. The best and acceptable answer I found is, Sex is devotion, sex is like doing Yoga, which is very necessary part of human life.
I also read some of the following facts about these sexy sculptures and related information.

1. After marriage, first night is conducted in the temple where all these sexy sculptures will be there. And also many married adults (may be relatives) used to watch the couple doing romance live. Yeah, this is little unbelievable but if you observe these sculptures carefully you can find that many sculptures depicts this.

2. In another story it says, these sexy sculptures are made in temples because people should feel sex is devotion, but not ugly thing. And to educate the people about how to perform sex they made these sexy sculptures.

3. Now a days some people are doing swapping. But these sexy sculptures shows this was there thousands of years back itself. And also as per some of the books, guest is treated as God. So when any guest comes to their home, after serving him nice dinner they also offer wife of the owner to him for that night. If you carefully go through these sexy sculptures you can find out all these information. And the swapping was done somewhat similar to keys game now a days in some high culture societies or pubs people do (I read it somewhere). They use to enjoy this game on blouse festival day. So to play the game, those females who are participating in the game, have to remove their blouse (Bra kind of thing) and throw in the river. And in the down side of the river (where water flows down) all men should stand and try to grab any one of the blouse. So each guy gets blouse, whoever’s female’s blouse was that, that female is going to sleep with that guy for that night. So in this Game, there is a chance, sometimes guy may get his own wife’s blouse only. So for this , some saying is also there “Same old husband even on festival day.” Even all these also explained in those sculptures.

Following are the some of the people’s views about this same topic:

When you enter the temple you become one with god leaving all your thoughts behind. Many sculptures also depict our gods with their wives in erotic positions as all gods in our mythology have to take birth and suffer/ live life as a common person. So the same was justified with them in such positions on our walls.

Sex symbols have been associated with Hinduism from an early stage. These symbols were mainly part of nature worship. There is difference of opinion regarding the exact reason for sex sculptures in Hindu temples. And the notion of Hindu sex temples is wrong. A Classic example is Khajuraho were only 20% of the sculptures are sex sculptures that too they are depicted along with other aspects life.

Kama (materialistic living which includes sex) is one among the four paths suggested in Hinduism to merge with Brahman or to escape from rebirth(Moksha). Many scholars think these sculptures were meant to explain the ‘Kama’ aspect to people.

A closer study of Hinduism will reveal that sex was never a taboo during the ancient period. Some believe they were meant for sex education and there is nothing unnatural for temples to have them. In fact, the sex sculptures are all seen outside the Hindu temple along with other sculptures depicting materialistic way of life.

Buddhism had completely devoured Hinduism during the initial phase of1st millennium. But soon the rigid Buddhist way of life began to create problems in the society. It is said that Hindu sages saw this as an opportunity to revive Hinduism. To invite people into family and sex life these sculptures were created.

The ancient Hindu kings of India were noted for their extravagance. Some scholars believe the sculptures were part this luxury

And some more Opinions by different people:

1) Old Kings lives in obscene luxury and that they used these for excitemnt.
2) Part of Sexual education for people since most people visit temples, it was an apporiate place for mass communication.
3) Hinduism believes in the efficacy of all four paths to moksha (Dharma, Artha, Yoaga and Kama), these sculpures were provided to assist in the last of these four paths.
4) Other theories have to do with the role of temples themselves in those times: they were considered places of learning as well as worship – especially of the finer arts, including the art of lovemaking. In addition, some believe that the depiction of sexual activities in temples was considered a good omen because it represented new beginnings and new life.

And finally here are some of the few temples where you can find sexy sculptures in INDIA:
