Adoption

Well, my fence gates are installed and now time adopt a dog. I had not realized COVID restrictions and insane specifications would make so difficult adopt a pet. I am no stranger dogs. I've raised 6 Rottweilers since age twelve. My parents had Dobermans when I was really young. I know how train a dog a leash, basic commands, crate train, etc. But I am now cautious about these adoption agencies.

seems they want put most ridiculous restrictions on adopters, want their version of a "perfect adopter" place the most broken of dogs in a home. 's like putting a square peg into a round hole. Not happening.

If a dog cannot be placed in a home with anyone but an adult, what does that say about agency adopting them out. says, "hey, we have dogs sitting in crates that we let out a few times a day eat, drink water and potty. We don't actually work with them get them adopted as soon as possible".

And the amount of Pit Bulls and Pit Bull Mix, off the fucking charts. They fill shelters because too many losers thought would be "cool" own a Pit Bull not understanding breed or what takes even have a dog. What a shame.

I would prefer a Greyhound, but nearest agency has a long waiting list and some of other Greyhound groups are no longer adopting. I guess the closure of the tracks in Florida has curtailed adoptions for Greyhounds. So that idea out.

No ankle biters for . I can't stand yappy little shits. I prefer a medium large size dog, but I don't trust adopting anything with Pit Bull in it since too many losers don't know how to take care of them. Makes them unpredictable. I am and always have been a very responsible dog owner.

Hello Donna, First time here to your blog.
I grew up with dogs and most seemed to just show up. My grandfather had surprised us with a toy Pomeranian. Tiny dog but would sometime chase a German Shepard down the street.
Good Luck with finding your new friend. My opinion on so many of the dogs are that someone that does not know how or not willing to spend the time gets the animals and then it gets to be a chore for them so it is easier to get rid of the problem they created.
My son and his girlfriend have a couple of dogs but one group they were trying to work with would not return calls either. All these questions and she works as a vet tech
Good Luck and try to find a puppy you can train yourself

1. From someone who's had one, skip the greyhound unless you can adopt a pair or have another dog. Former racing dogs suck at being dogs, most of the time. They've had the play and such trained out of them at the track. Incredibly sweet dispositions, though.

2. Not surprising the single breed rescues want the perfect adopter, particularly the doberman ones. They're picky because they can be.

3. I'd strongly urge you to reconsider your stance on pit bulls. When I was a volunteer trainer at the Richmond SPCA, I'd say roughly 40% of our dogs were pit bulls. I've probably interacted with over 100 of them and only came into contact with 2 that weren't complete love sponges. Both had man issues, a clear indicator of prior abuse. I wouldn't hesitate to adopt a pit bull.

I'd check with the local SPCA (York was pretty good, last I interacted with them) and ask if they perform the American Temperament Test Society (ATTS) test on their incoming dogs. It's a standardized test to confirm temperament (duh). Richmond would only take in dogs that had passed this test.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. As you can tell, this is a topic I'm passionate about.

Pit & Pit Mix in some Cultures are looked at among Guys, Gals or Couples as being , " A Status Symbol " !! Just another way of saying, " HEY !! Look at Me !! I'm COOL !! " And yet during nice weather, I can take my PUGGLE , Pug & Beagle Mix, and receive comments as to , How cute he is !!! Not !! Boasting, but on a 2 mile walk at a local park I heard that comment 4 times not only from gals but from 1 guy also !!! Before some think or even write it ; I DO NOT USE HIM TO PICK UP GALS, although it has been mighty Tempting By the way; both my dog and cat are Local Pound Rescues !!!
If you could picture it as I write this, dog is lying beside my foot & cat is lying in close proximity !!

The control people try to use on others is really something. When I was running cattle I didn't pay much attention to the animal rights groups but it has definitely gotten worse. I did have a few non farm friends try to tell me how to take care of my cattle and horses, what they seem to not understand is those animals were a investment and it was in my best interest to keep them happy and healthy. Hell I even had a neighbor call the humane society on me because they couldn't see the hay bales.
Anyhow good luck in your search.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right

Hopefully you will get a pet soon. Going through the adoption process is never easy so I have always opted for local shelters. Had a wonderful Doberman/Rot mix who was the biggest most loyal baby ever. He was beautiful and gave me 17 years of love. My most recent one is a chihuahua/terrier mix and he is also very loyal and loving but was clearly abused by others. It took him a few months to stop flinching when being petted and run away from men. We all have our own likes for certain breeds and temperments but we all share a deep love for our four legged family members.

My name is MrWrong and I approved this comment

Don’t give up hope. If you want to purchase a Doberman, there is someone in the world that wants to sell you one.

I did fill out an application for a Doberman Rescue. They haven't acknowledged my application yet. So that is probably a no go as well.
