How Goldfish Stay Alive in Icy Water
How Goldfish Stay Alive in Icy Water Goldfish stay alive in icy water in the wild by getting drunk, research reveals. The popular pets produce lactic acid by swimming hard when lakes freeze over, which distills to ethanol – pure alcohol . It allows them to survive long, harsh winters in oxygen-free waters but puts them over the drink-drive limit. Biologist Dr Michael Berenbrink, of the University of Liverpool, said: “They are able to withstand large amounts of alcohol. It is amazing.” |

And in addition to their 24-Hour hard swimming, they stay in shape working off their Community Service. Lol Thanks for the education, Laura. The 451

*Sigh* If only there was a linear progression between the freezing points of water (0 ℃) and ethanol (-114 ℃), we could derive more information regarding the tolerance and survivability of these fishies, but alas, must rely upon empirical data. How troublesome, yet… fascinating… Plus, they're training hard, and that's important.
