It's Pretty Simple, If You Think About It

You just never know, when you'll hear random words of wisdom - they can pop up anywhere.

Usually my workday ends, with a visit to the local coffee shop. I order a medium cup, of really good, dark roasted Columbian. The people working at that place know me, and I know them. It's relaxed, and it kind of puts a lustre on my day. You know what I mean?

This guy Thomas, was working behind the counter yesterday. I've gotten to know him pretty well. I actually met him, his wife and his three kids, this past summer. I was down by the lake, and it was completely by accident...

Someone was grilling that day and it smelled, soo... good. I just had to follow the smoke. I.m nosy, so I walked over to where that barbecue was. When I saw it was Thomas, my coffee guy, I was surprised. He offered me a beer and we shared a bunch of laughs. Oh... and his wife gave me a taste of the meat she was grilling. Man... it was fantastic! Have you ever savored, really good... barbecued lamb?

Anyway, Thomas moved to this city from Ethiopia... just last year. He was a teacher over there, but he's still trying to get accredited - over here. While he studies for his exams, he works at the coffee shop, doling out coffee - one cup... at a time.

And that's where I was... waiting in line. The lady in front of me must have been having a really bad day. I could see she was getting totally frustrated. She was rummaging through her purse, looking for her wallet and practically ripped that thing in half - trying to find it. She deffinitely surprised everyone there, when she started yelling.

"I can't find my wallet. What else is gonna go wrong? What's it... all... ABOUT?"

"Its about finding your wall.et and paying, so we can get the fuck out of here lady!" I could have answered.

Thomas looked at her, and quietly spoke first.

"What's it all about? It's about finding someone to love. Finding someone who loves you. Making a family and loving them. That's, what it's all about."

She looked at Thomas and said nothing. I guess she found her wallet, because she paid and walked out. It was my turn.

" Hey Thomas ... How's it going? "

" Always good Paul... Always good", he smiled.

And you know what? I believed him. He handed me my perfect cup of coffee - two creams, one su.gar. It's pretty simple... if you think about it.

So...
What type of positive thought or mantra, motivates you throughout your day?

Thomas served me grilled lamb and it was tasty and delicious. But my favorite fire prepped food is BBQ chicken. What's yours?

Have a great day. Clean out your fridge, from time to time. . .

Thought or mantra for the day... I don't know... It might change from day to day. Some days I really just remind myself to remain calm and focus..especially if there are heavy business meetings scheduled. Other days I'll just choose to remind myself to have a good time. Most every day I remind myself to just take it easy and enjoy my day to it's fullest. I used to like that web site that gave you a thought for the day. It gave me something different to think about for the day . . or as long as I would remember it... yep It's about reminding yourself ,

I've mentioned it before but my goto BBQ is chicken. Easy to make and just mouth watering good. Slathered with some sauce .A side of potato salad and coleslaw and some company ... and I'm a happy camper. I'm hungry as I write this ...

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

51 yrs in medicine puts it in perspective for me. Those little annoyances pale in comparison to what so many endure. When my feet hurt and I am tired from the day, I am thankful that I can physically and mentally do the thing that makes me tired. I guess “ count your blessings” is my mantra.

I have friends and family in the medical profession, so I understand , to some extent what you're talking about. Definitely - 'Count Your Blessings', is one that I use often. I'm sure you have many , many stories from your years in medicine, that are worthy of sharing.

I don't really have a mantra. I guess the only thing I say to myself when I wake up is, "huh, I'm still alive".

True. . . Periodically . . I ask the same question. It feels pretty good when I can hear myself answer - Yes !

I did a post a while back about parts of my life philosophy . I fix the things I can, and give it all I've got. If I can't fix it..I say fuck it, and don't let it drag me down. Simple, but effective.

I BBQ everything. Others seem to like my Brisket the best. But I'm a big fan of BBQ'd ribs. Secret...it's the variation of my Grandpa's secret BBQ sauce. That stuff makes anything taste good.

Yep... I read that one. I change up my thought of the day, but the one that stays constant is - the reminder to myself to keep things balanced and level.
That BBQ sauce recipe. . . Any chance that sauce recipe can be shared (he asked while nodding appreciatively) ? I understand the need for secrecy. lol I didn't mean here, I meant privately. Ribs are (actually ) my fav, but I just can't make them perfectly - all of the time.

I understand exactly what you mean. Well... there is THIS site , for starters, but it's true that nothing replaces a live, face to face and skin on skin meeting. If it were possible, I would offer to come over and help you vacuum...

Sorry man..even my ex wife doesn't know the recipe. LOL Even the recipe is written in a sorta code..you have to know which measurements are wrong. And what needs to be left out, and what's missing.

Only one of my kids actually knows how to make it right. That way, it stays in the family. My oldest sons wife..who would tell everyone in her family if she knew...always says. "I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but mine never tastes as good as yours. " LOL

Silly? Maybe. Fun and a great heirloom..Absolutely.

Yep . . I figured as much. It was worth asking. I have a bunch of incantations and they're all close. I'll keep trying . It's really an art ! The whole process is an art ! Maybe one day when you're feeling generous... After all , no one is paying attention here . Are they ? Sounds like a classic, when you start describing the intentional errors. You're taking it to the next level lol

Isn't it crazy all the time we put in here? The other night I calculated that it must have been close to an hour or more, replying and posting comments to all the blogs I follow plus my own. Sheesh . . omg. I mean it's fun and all, but...I could knot a sweater with all the time I've put in here ...
I do agree that personal touch is something that is important. No easy solutions, right... Except to get out there in the real world, if you have that opportunity . I hope you find them for yourself. But in the meantime. . . hey let's pretend... that we're close by...
Love the way you smell today !

My daughter was 5 when she was diagnosed with cancer. (She's fine now btw) I learned then that no matter how bad things seem, there is always someone worse off than you. There were many days I felt really bad for that person.

My mantra? "Never give up. Never surrender." It keeps me going when life gets me down.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!
