I have allergies, which are year-round but do get aggravated in spring. So I have this light dry intermittent cough. I also get an itchy, runny nose and itchy eyes sometimes.

It doesn't scare me shitless but it does worry me. One of the symptoms of COVID-19 is a dry cough. So how do I know, without testing, if my allergy cough is masking a potential COVID-19 symptom?

Good question. I really don't know. Sometimes my allergies are bad enough that I feel like I'm coming down with a cold for a day or so. In that case, I could take my temperature. I did so a couple of days ago, turned out my temp was normal.

Some people have given me funny looks or veered away from me when I cough. It's cool, can't blame them for being cautious right now. I do my best to not cough if I'm out.

Those of you with allergies that imitate cold symptoms, how are you coping?

Unfortunately we are some time away from simple and readily-available testing. Our response continues to be hampered by politics and ego literally and figuratively *trumping* science.

Consequently if you are sneezing and coughing, the most prudent assumption is that you are infected and must (not *should*!) self-isolate. If you begin to run a fever and/or present respiratory issues (lung congestion), it's time to seek medical attention.

I hadn't heard that sneezing was particularly a symptom, only coughing. However, I am abiding by California's shelter-in-place order and keeping a good distance from anybody I see on the street when I go out for exercise. If I get a fever, I will call the doctor, of course.

Good evening, I think the key is a fever, even slight which we don't get with seasonal allergies, I have a big issue with spring time pollen and we are in the peak of it now, I worked in y yards all day Saturday and even wearing a mask it did give me problems, but with some antihistamines , good double shot of George Dickel, a hot shower I am a lot better, I too get this dry cough, but I think it is from my sinus and running down my throat to try to strangle me at times.. But never a fever, and this is first thing they are looking for in the new virus. I hope you don't have it or get it..good luck with your allergies what ever is causing them..

Yup. Unless I begun to run a fever or get chest discomfort, I'm still assuming it's my allergies that I've had for a few years now.

i feel the same way. springtime runny nose, dry cough and sneezes . been that way my whole life. i get worried now as its the same as corona. maybe i have had it for 50 years. i just try and not do those on my rare days shopping. been home mostly for over a week now.

FresnoWoman replies on 24/3/2020 11h33:
50 years of runny nose, dry coughing, sneezing? You're probably okay then, but you can always doublecheck by taking your temperature. I've done that a couple of times and found it reassuring to see my temperature showing as normal.

Wow! I've been going through the same thing with my asthma. I always have a cough, especially in the morning. I have a slight sore throat after having oral surgery over the weekend, and it feels like I'm coming down with a cold, but it also snowed here yesterday, after having a few warm days. I just talked to my sister, and she said, "Calm down. You have seasonal asthma, just like me!". OK, OK, I found my emergency inhaler, and I'm getting it together. It's scary!

Have a great day, and be nice to one another.

FresnoWoman replies on 24/3/2020 11h35:
Yes, it is scary. But if you don't have fever, it may just be the same ol'. Do check your temperature if you can and check with your doctor if you start feeling worse.

Corona virus normally gives you a temperature as well, so as long as your chest and back don't feel hot to the touch your probably ok?

I think with the cough it's more a case of if it's worse then your normal, allergy type cough.

(I'm not a Doc BTW, just from research online, so if your unsure seek professional help)

FresnoWoman replies on 24/3/2020 11h41:
I have a thermometer so I'll know if I have a fever. It's just frustrating to have a cough that might cover up the early approach of COVID-19 but what can ya do but watch for the other indicators. It must suck even worse for people who have asthma or other breathing problems to not now if it's just their condition or something more.

YUP, my understanding is having a fever, or not, is the key to differentiating flu from cold and allergies.

MY concern is people freaking out over my sneezing and sniveling.

Now that the snow is gone( well maybe after tonight it will be back) I have spring allergies and I know that my itchy eyes and runny nose are just that. I just finished a massive dose of antibiotics etc for pneumonia plus was negative for Flu A and B so I am just going to hunker down and rad and share bad memes.

im that way with cigarette smoke.
oh sure, you cant smoke inside public buildings,
but you still have to
walk through a cloud of smoke AT THE DOOR to get in.

in the 80s when cocaine was a rage,
allergy people were unduly scrutinized then too.

hang in there, the way the world is going,
with global pollution occurring hand-in-hand with global warming,
itll soon be a miracle if any of us can breath without issues.

well, that was gloomy, wasnt it? sorry, wasnt my intention.
point is, youre not alone.

I think we're entitled to have our gloomy moods at a time like this. Just as long as we don't run screaming out into the streets or otherwise cause mayhem and suffering. So no worries.

Interesting about the cocaine causing scrutiny like that. I wasn't ever around coke users at that time. I try to rein in my cough when I'm out since coughing doesn't really make a difference to how my throat feels.

I have similar seasonal allergies, at this point in time, in this environment of shelter in place, I feel very self conscious when I sneeze. Even though I know it's only allergies.

I was wondering that myself, since I've read, depending on the person, the Covid-19 symptoms can feel very mild.

I've resolved, that if in the event I have the following symptoms: fever, cough, chills, basically flu like symptoms, I will start the process of getting myself tested.
Apparently, one is not supposed to just go to the emergency room or the doctors office, so as to not contaminate others, if incase.

FresnoWoman replies on 24/3/2020 11h52:
Yes. I've read that many people may have mild symptoms. We'll know better once we get that antibodies testing out. Everybody should be tested eventually, but that will take time and resources to effect.

From what I heard, if someone starts suffering from the symptoms, they are to CALL the doctor or urgent care first, not just go. That way, the facility can make preparations. I've read some people are calling, getting diagnosed over the phone, and even having prescriptions transmitted to the pharmacy. Anyway, hope you can stay well or get only the mild version at most.

I'd milk it if I were you. If it gains you a bunch of spots in the lineup - why NOT, cough a few times? 🤔 🍷🍷❗😎

Heh. Definitely tempting. Even before the social distancing orders, I always liked my personal space.
