There can be no beans...:)

There can be no beans...:)

If you happened to miss my ranting rave last night, the last 24 hours have been a bitch. Things are settling down..Certainly not settled, but now it's just working through the problem. That said, I figured I'd cook some of my Texas Chili today. Cooking, the smell of the chili, and of course eating a good bowl of chili always helps my soul.

We had a slight discussion among a few of us on here, about what goes in chili. Or more concisely, what doesn't. I consider myself a "purist" with a lot of stuff and chili is one of those things.

There is no such thing as a melon margarita. There is no such thing as an apple martini.I do like mixing chocolate liqueur with vodka...but it's not a chocolate martini. It just doesn't exist , in a purist way of thinking. LOL.

And yes, Chili, or more specifically Texas Chili has no beans. Sure you can make a chili with beans. My turncoat daughter, likes beans in her chili. I still love her, though there are many comments made about turning her back on Texas. She's just obviously not as much of a Purist, as I am. That's ok. I've always said, I'd like them to be their own person, and always be better than me.

The chili is still cooking. Takes most of the day. My oldest is coming over in a bit with his wife and kids. He tends to be a purist as well, so I'm sure we'll be ganging up on the bean lover. I'll update this as the chili moves along.

Do you find yourself being a purist on certain things? Foods and drinks? Other things in life?

I'm not sure if I can think of anything in a life situation I'm a purist about. Maybe some one else can come up with something...

Here's the Chili so far...

chili without beans?????? where then does all the flatulence come????? Funny you say that, tomorrow's meal with my kids is chili fries. My chili consists of yes, beans, hamburger, celery, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, jalapenos....and of course seasonings with some liquid smoke. Enjoy your meal plato!!

I make some pretty good chili. It even took 3rd place in a chili cook-off being judged by Oklahoma City firefighters many years ago. There are NO beans in my chili. I just don't like them in there. I'll provide them if someone wants them, but I won't cook them in my chili. It's just wrong.
I also grew up eating spaghetti red. Still love it. In fact I have some chili in the fridge...and noodles. And cheese. Dinner anyone?

I like my traditions...ie. traditional stuffing, beans in my chilli etc.. Funny I made cornbread today and was wishing I had some spicy chilly still in the freezer to defrost...

It's amazing what kind of recipes you can find if you look up chili. Hell, some of them don't even resemble chili in the least. LOL

I can't say I've ever heard of it served over rice, but that would be one way to "stretch" it.

It's a flatulence free chili. LOL For Flatulence, we make a big ole pot of pinto beans.

So I take it you're not a purist then in the slightest. ?

Sure chili can have beans...just can't be Texas chili.

That's a good point that I missed. It has to be spicy. Cornbread goes pretty good with a bowl of chili.

A purist is another word for rigid....in some instances rigidity is good. In other instances, it's all about flexibility.

Oh.....we re talking chilli huh ?

Silly me ~~

Purist? As in purist : a person who adheres strictly and often excessively to a tradition? Sort of... and then again, not really. I kinda go with the flow, until that moment, when someone puts salt on one of my meals without tasting it first... Or that other time someone told me that they preferred the 'colorized' version of 'It's A Wonderful Life'.. So - nope. I'm not a purist... until I am... I guess. 🤔

I used to be a scotch drinker..and would agree. Neat. Sorta like people drinking Cognac on the rocks..what's up with that. LOL

LOL good answer.

And yeah, I cringe when people salt a dish I made without tasting it.

One question that comes to mind is . . . Do you do everything traditionally?

To the fart-less Texan . . .
Flatulence and chili are like the Marx brothers without Groucho.
This is why Texas might not be missed if they secede from the US, the cow"boys" are another.

Do you find yourself being a purist on certain things?
Yes, but none of them are coming to mind right now.

Beans or no beans, it still gives me heartburn. The only way to get me to eat beans is to put them in chili, other wise you can throw them out. I'm strict on a few things, coffee black, whiskey straight, my beer cold and my steak rare. I won't season or add anything to something until I've tasted it

I was born in Texas and brew my chili without beans. If you would like more insight into chili then read "A Bowl of Red" by Frank X Tolbert.

Guess what I made today?? Chili. Cuz we talked about it earlier in the week, and I haven't made it in forever.

Mine is so far from "Texas" chili, you probably wouldn't even acknowledge it as chili...so, we'll just call it...SeaGirl's yummy spicy soup with beans.

Ground meat, chili beans, kidney beans, sliced black olives, beer, brown sugar, tabasco, onions, garlic, jalapeno...plus the tomato sauce and paste. (And this time around I added roasted corn, because I couldn't find the Mexican style chili beans, which have roasted corn).

Actually the original chile had nothing but meat water, and you're right. Chili peppers.

I was just the opposite. I never knew of chili with beans till I met my ex wife. She also made it with hamburger meat. I make mine with Sirloin.

People are claiming you're annoying? People from here?

I've eaten it with beans on occasion. But, nah..I'll usually pass if it's got beans in it.

Oh, and for being a purist...the only thing I can think of is clam chowder...it needs to be a creamy white chowder, not a tomato based chowder.

There might be other things, but I can't think of anything.
