For some reason, the last day of the old year always kind of gets me right here (fist over chest).

Cheers and a hearty welcome to 2019!

Out of curiosity and a desire to try out the creating of a poll, I ask you this: do you prefer to write your posts directly on passion or do you prefer to write them up ahead of time and paste them in?
always write posts directly in AFF text box
mostly write in AFF text box but occasionally in a text editor
evenly split between AFF text box and text editor
mostly write in text editor but occasionally in AFF text box
always write in text editor then C&P into AFF
me? don't blog myself, just like to read 'em

Why ya bustin' my chops lately, Captcha?

You're making it a real ordeal to log on lately, Captcha, and it's pissing me the fuck off. I shouldn't have to click through 6 or 7 pages of tiled images just to log in. Nor should I have to decide if that vaguely streetlight-shaped thing in the distance is a traffic light or not. Don't do that distance shot crap!

Dating = serious?

So I was chatting online with a man yesterday evening, and he kept asking me if I was looking for "something serious". I asked him what "serious" meant and he said "If you want to date, that's serious." Really?

I said that dating was a way to get to know someone or just spend time doing fun things. Hell, eating a good meal at a restaurant is enjoyable, especially with a glass or two of good wine. But apparently he considers dating srs bzns. I told him dating was just a fun thing to do and "serious" kicks in when two people decide to make some kind of a commitment to each other. He disagreed with me, and the conversation trailed off.

Who thinks that dating is nothing serious in itself and who considers dating a serious thing? When do you consider things to be serious?

Shy? That word does not mean what you think it means.

First off, yes, I am a shy person. However, I'm more shy face-to-face with people I don't know. Less shy online, not shy with my friends at all.

However.

Quite a few guys have called me "shy" via IM. My lack of response to your messages is not out of shyness. Assuming no site-related IM issues that day, there's one overarching reason why I don't respond to your IM.

I don't like you. That's it. There could be various reasons why I don't like you, but the bottom line is, I won't respond to IMs of guys I don't like or have no interest in. Thus I have no obligation to reply to you, or to keep the conversation going if it took a turn I didn't like.

Pedestrian on a median

The California Vehicle Code really gets on my nerves sometimes. Under it, pedestrians are coddled to a ridiculous extent, such that drivers don't proceed even when it would make more sense. Today, I was walking across a parking lot, and paused on a median to let a car go by. The driver waved me on, but I waved that they could go ahead. It got me thinking. There are good reasons why a pedestrian may not want to proceed:

1) There is more than one lane to cross. The stopped driver may be in the closer lane, and the pedestrian can't see beyond the car to see any other drivers in the far lane. It has happened to me where the stopped car was in the near lane and I could no longer see other oncoming cars. I won't go if I can't see all oncoming lanes clearly.

2) The pedestrian may be sore or ill or wobbly, and not feel like crossing quickly. Once, while driving along a narrow street, I saw an elderly woman waiting so I stopped for her. She hesitated, thus I proceeded. I thought she might be nervous about shuffling out and maybe even falling down in front of my car.

3) The pedestrian isn't actually going to cross but is waiting for a bus or another person to come pick him/her up.

4) The pedestrian thinks hanging back by standing on a sidewalk, curb or median is a good way to see what the traffic's doing, and thus believes right-of-way hasn't kicked in yet.

What other reasons might there be for a pedrestrian not wanting to exercise right of way?
