I am NOT down to earth! In fact I don’t know what that means anymore. My head is in the clouds. However, you may be able to say that I am always thinking because one of the my many tasks is to observe, report & predict the weather. Growing up in the MI, I became a cook at family restaurants and continued to do so when I moved to a small town in Alaska named after the secretary of treasure, who is known for purchasing the state, Seward. The minimal law enforcement and being a cook, as most cooks are by statistic, I become a raging alcoholic. I would wake up in the morning and start drinking. In the fall of 04, on one of those mornings, I hit a tree on Salmon Creek Road. I was medivacked to Anchorage, 125 miles North, where I was unconscious for a month. I suffered a head trauma and I had to relearn how to walk, talk, my family, life, etc, etc, etc. It took six months after I woke up to be able to function in again. I became affiliated with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation where I was placed in a kitchen. I realized it did not bring me the same satisfaction as before my accident. My counselor told me many things, one was about his friend, a seaman. I tried to get accepted into this non-profit organization called Sealink, based in Juneau, on my own and finally was, with help from DVR. Sealink put me into SHLSS, a School of Seamanship, in Piney Point, MD. I moved back in G.R. again for some time repaying the debt I had collected from the accident and building a down payment on my condo in AK. While in G.R, I rode my bicycle a lot and put these handlebar extensions on my ten-speed which are designed for a mountain bike. In June of 08 by the West River Baseball field, I lost control and hit the asphalt. I lost my two front teeth, and I had second degree burns on my knee, shoulder and chin. I rode home like this with endorphins being released throughout my body, smiling, and laughing to and at myself. I went to the dentist that afternoon where I had to have two more teeth pulled from the extensive blow. It took me about a year and two flippers (temporary bridge) before I had a permanent bridge put in by the same dentist. I would like to thank everyone who helped me through these accidents, especially my Mother who become my guardian in the rehabilitation process after my first accident, my Father who supported us during this time and me throughout my life, the dentist and all those not mentioned. I work for TOTE on board the ro-ro vessel North Star. We are in the process of converting our four main diesel generators into dual fuel to incorporate LNG which has been going on for 3 to 5 years now. This process is a big task for the engine department. However, on deck we don’t have much to do, just routine maintenance. I am on the 12 to 4 watch and I have been tasked with the project of testing heat, fire and smoke detectors. This is mainly because during the 8 to 12 watch, the 4 to 8 is on the rest period and alarms will sound. We have just finished testing all the heat detectors on deck with a count of just under 1000, but when I usually when I test them quarterly, I test 50 to 60. Unfortunately, we are only about a third of the way done. I hope this bit of honesty is not too late in our online acquaintanceship, but I am married. However, due to my profession my Wife & I realize that neither of our needs are being met while I am working. Therefore, we are in an open relationship.
